Working in hospitality and events can be incredibly rewarding. You can make people happy on a daily basis, learn a variety of skills and have access to a range of opportunities.
But is working in hospitality and events for everyone?
Customer facing
While not all jobs in the hospitality and events industry deal directly with customers, a great deal do. Often, your role will be about making other people happy. You will need to be attentive and polite. If you don’t deal directly with customers, you’re bound to be working on a product or service that will eventually reach customers. Is this something you’re prepared to do on a regular basis?
Working hours
Many hospitality and events jobs have unconventional working hours. If you’re working in a restaurant or a bar for example, you may work late into the evening or into the morning. You may also be required to work on weekends. This can be beneficial for those seeking greater flexibility. Some environments can also be fast paced and busy, especially during peak periods such as public holidays.
Skill-set
Working in hospitality and events does require some soft skills. You should be a good communicator, be attentive and adaptable. One of the benefits of the industry is that many entry level positions will enable employees to learn on the job. More senior or specialised roles will require training and/or experience. It’s a good idea to review your current skill set to ensure you’re a match for the industry. If not, you can always learn the skills required through training or a mentorship.
