Managing stress in the workplace
2 mins read
It has been a challenging year for many. With so much uncertainty and change, ensuring good mental health is vital. But how is that achieved?
Here are three ways you can manage stress in the workplace.
Regular check-ins
While everyone would like to see life return to normal, know that this is a challenge for all of us and getting things back on track will take hard work and time. Keep checking-in with yourself and ask key questions: How am I feeling? Do I need support? What resources/help do I need to get the job done? Have regular conversations with your manager/co-workers to ensure you are on the same page with tasks and expectations, if you feel overwhelmed, speak up.
Create balance
Especially during busy periods, other areas of life can fall by the wayside. At the time it may feel like you’re being productive, but at what cost? Working without balance isn’t sustainable and eventually, something has to give. If you’re someone who struggles to create balance, find an accountability partner – a co-worker, friend or mentor who can remind you to take breaks and find ways to bring balance into your workweek such as exercise, lunch with co-workers or doing something you enjoy.
Support systems
Stress can be a challenge to manage on your own. When we are stressed, it can be harder to think clearly. Having someone else to assist you during these times can be incredibly beneficial. It’s a chance to talk about what’s on your mind and get greater clarity around what’s going on for you. It doesn’t have to be someone at your place of work, you can talk to a friend, family member or use a free support service such as an Employee Assistance Program.
Remember, there is no shame in feeling overwhelmed and it’s not something you have to deal with alone.
